Meaning of the Moon in your Natal Chart

Each planet in a birth chart represents different drives within us. The sun represents the core of our personality, our essential self; so, when we know our sun sign, this gives us a good idea of how the person will operate. But that’s not the whole story. There are ten planets in our chart, plus the rising sign; and each of them is a facet of our psyche. The moon represents our emotional nature, how we behave when we are most comfortable, and what we need in order to be happy. We all have a moon in our chart, but where that moon is placed, in what sign and what house, describes how it will function. Linked with the sun sign and rising sign, the placement of the moon can give us a great deal of information about you. The Moon is described by the sign it is in, much like a noun is described by an adjective. For example, a “Leo Moon” person expresses their emotions boldly, colorfully, and with dramatic flair. A “Gemini Moon” person will tend to be more analytical, and likes to talk about and process their emotions carefully. These descriptions are limited for the sake of example, but the point is to show how the different signs color how the moon looks on the individual. The house in which the moon lies describes the area of life in which the “moon issues” are most often played out. For example, a 6th house moon would describe someone who derives great emotional satisfaction from work and service, and from having a “daily routine” (all 6th house issues). A 12th house moon describes one who thrives emotionally on connecting with spirit, the occult side of life, and learning about their own subconscious (the terrain of the twelfth house). The moon, finally, can describe 1. issues from the person’s childhood and 2. one’s relationship with their mother. There are always many layers to the interpretation of a birth chart, and in looking at just this one planet, we see why this is so. The behaviors associated with the moon are often those things we are “shamed” for in childhood, whether it be the exuberance and buoyancy of a Sagittarius moon (which can be too much for certain adults), or the emotional shyness of a Cancer moon (which may be the cause of constant prodding by adults to “be more social”). The moon is nearly as important as the sun in the birth chart. Without knowing this important piece, we lose sight of the thing most basic to our humanness: our emotional nature. written by Dena DeCastro
